To Host Academic Session for 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A ceremonial academic session is scheduled for Monday in Sofia to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University noted that the April Uprising was a wholly Bulgarian undertaking whose outcome represented a crucial step in the consolidation of the Bulgarian nation’s struggle for freedom. To mark this significant historical milestone, a joint academic event is being organized by several institutions, including Sofia University, the State Archives Agency, the G.S.

Rakovski National Defence College, the St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, the St Cyril and St Methodius National Library, and the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The day’s activities begin at 11:00 am with a ceremony held at the National Defence College. The academic session formally opens at 1:00 pm within the Rectorate of Sofia University, where historians are scheduled to participate in discussions across two dedicated panels.

Additionally, a poster exhibition focusing on the April Uprising will open at 1:45 pm in the Rectorate’s foyer, curated by Asst. Prof. Vladimir Terziev.

The commemorative events conclude in the late afternoon with the opening of the exhibition titled “For the Freedom of a Nation.” This display, organized by the National Library and the State Archives Agency, will take place at the National Library, concluding the day’s observance in Sofia.
