To Host Academic Session for 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A ceremonial academic session commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876 is scheduled to take place in Sofia on Monday. St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University noted that the April Uprising represented a significant, purely Bulgarian undertaking that played a key role in the consolidation of the Bulgarian national struggle for freedom. To observe this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history, several institutions are collaborating on the event.

Organizers include Sofia University, the State Archives Agency, the G.S. Rakovski National Defence College, the St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, the St Cyril and St Methodius National Library, and the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The day’s activities begin at 11:00 am with a ceremony held at the National Defence College.

The academic session proper commences at 1:00 pm in the Rectorate of Sofia University, where historians are set to participate in discussions across two dedicated panels. Furthermore, a poster exhibition focusing on the April Uprising will open at 1:45 pm in the Sofia University Rectorate foyer, curated by Asst. Prof.

Vladimir Terziev. The commemoration concludes in the late afternoon with the opening of the exhibition titled “For the Freedom of a Nation.” This display will take place at the National Library, an initiative jointly staged by the National Library and the State Archives Agency. The multi-faceted event provides a comprehensive academic and visual examination of the historical impact of the uprising.
