To Host Academic Session for 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

A ceremonial academic session commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876 is scheduled to take place in Sofia on Monday. According to the St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University, the April Uprising constituted a pivotal national effort whose outcomes were crucial to the Bulgarian struggle for independence. To mark this significant date in Bulgarian history, several institutions are collaborating on the academic event.

Organizers include Sofia University, the State Archives Agency, the G.S. Rakovski National Defence College, the St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, the St Cyril and St Methodius National Library, and the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The commemorative program begins at 11:00 AM with a ceremony held at the National Defence College.

This is followed by the official opening of the academic session at 1:00 PM in the Sofia University Rectorate, where historians will participate in discussions across two dedicated panels. Further historical context will be provided at 1:45 PM with the opening of a poster exhibition dedicated to the April Uprising, authored by Asst. Prof.

Vladimir Terziev, located in the Rectorate foyer. The day’s events conclude at 5:00 PM with the opening of the exhibition, “For the Freedom of a Nation,” at the National Library, a joint staging effort by the National Library and the State Archives Agency.
