A ceremonial academic session marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876 will take place in Sofia. St Kliment Ohridski Sofia University noted that the April Uprising was a pivotal, entirely Bulgarian effort whose outcome solidified the Bulgarian nation’s struggle for freedom. To commemorate this significant moment in Bulgarian history, a joint academic session has been organized by several institutions, including Sofia University, the State Archives Agency, the G.S.
Rakovski National Defence College, the St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, the St Cyril and St Methodius National Library, and the Institute for Historical Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The day’s events begin at 11:00 am with a ceremony held at the National Defence College. The academic proceedings will commence at 1:00 pm in the Rectorate of Sofia University, featuring discussions from historians across two dedicated panels.
Complementing the academic discussions, a poster exhibition focusing on the April Uprising will open at 1:45 pm in the Sofia University Rectorate foyer, curated by Asst. Prof. Vladimir Terziev.
The commemorative events conclude in the late afternoon. At 5:00 pm, the National Library and the State Archives Agency will jointly open the exhibition titled “For the Freedom of a Nation” at the National Library. These coordinated activities underscore the academic and cultural importance placed on remembering the historical significance of the 1876 uprising for the city of Sofia and the nation.
