The GERB-UDF parliamentary group announced support for a representative from Progressive Bulgaria to assume the chairmanship of the new 52nd National Assembly. During the inaugural sitting on Thursday, MP Toma Bikov stated that this stance reflected the group’s view that Progressive Bulgaria’s victory in the recent elections warranted this leadership role. He clarified that the declaration was intended not as a negotiation tactic, but as an effort to restore a perceived parliamentary tradition and raise the overall political standard within the body.
Bikov further elaborated that maintaining a high political standard requires the opposition to actively represent citizens holding views different from the parliamentary majority, ensuring their right to express those views openly. Speaking on the state of governance in Bulgaria, the GERB-UDF group pointed to a period of instability. Bikov noted that over the past twelve years, the country has seen numerous coalition governments, culminating in a five-year period marked by chronic political crises and an inability among parliamentary forces to establish stable governance.
He argued this instability persisted despite the necessity for reforms across various public systems and the requirement for stable decisions within an unstable geopolitical environment. The group also criticized the fiscal policies, suggesting that treating budget deficits as normal has been concerning. Bikov concluded by reiterating that the party has consistently called for an elevation of political debate, warning that personal attacks and scandals undermine public trust in the entire political system and its institutions.
