Speaking at an event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil stated that the uprising generated not only profound heroism and great deeds but also martyrdom for faith. During the All-Bulgarian Solemn Assembly, held under the patronage of Vice President Iliana Iotova, the Patriarch reflected on the spring of 1876, characterizing it as a moment when the Orthodox Bulgarian people asserted their will for freedom and independence against the ruling Ottoman authorities and the wider world. He noted that this struggle was guided by the dignity of a people with a long history.
Patriarch Daniil emphasized that the events of 1876 represented the culmination of a broader spiritual and national revival, which was significantly supported by the Orthodox Church. He highlighted that the clergy preserved the national consciousness, standing alongside their communities as a moral pillar during the difficult period of the uprising. According to the Patriarch, the ideal of freedom is integral to the Christian worldview.
He argued that the heroic nature of the April Uprising demonstrated that even when history ends in tragedy, self-sacrifice and conscious struggle against injustice can give rise to new hope, ultimately leading to the successful Liberation War. Daniil pointed to the suffering of martyrs and the efforts of figures like Exarch Antim as pivotal. These actions, which involved gathering information about atrocities and communicating the plight of the Bulgarian people to European governments, were instrumental.
Furthermore, the Patriarch emphasized that the exceptional pastoral care demonstrated during this time was crucial. Earlier that day, he officiated a memorial service for the victims of the uprising, followed by a procession to the national assembly.
