Uprising Birthed Heroism but Also Martyrdom for Faith, Says Patriarch Daniil

During an event marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising on Monday, Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil addressed attendees. The assembly, titled the All-Bulgarian Solemn Assembly, took place under the patronage of Vice President Iliana Iotova. Patriarch Daniil stated that the uprising symbolized a moment when the Orthodox Bulgarian people declared their desire for freedom and independence to the ruling Ottoman authorities and the world.

He noted that the struggle was guided by the dignity of a people with a long history. He emphasized that the events of April 1876 represented the culmination of a broader national and spiritual revival, which he credited to the guiding role of the Orthodox Church. The Patriarch highlighted the vital role of the clergy, who, according to his speech, preserved the spiritual and cultural memory of the nation during the challenging times of the uprising.

He asserted that the ideal of freedom is integral to Christian faith. Daniil argued that the historical feat of the uprising proves that self-sacrifice against injustice can give rise to new hope, ultimately leading to success, such as the subsequent Liberation War. He specifically mentioned the martyrdom and valor displayed, citing the efforts of figures like the Bulgarian Exarch Antim, who gathered information about the atrocities and informed European governments.

These actions, alongside the archpastoral care shown, transformed the tragedy of the uprising into a strategic success. Earlier, Patriarch Daniil participated in a memorial service for the victims. The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including President Iliana Iotova, and representatives from academic and political sectors.

The commemoration concluded with a procession to the national assembly site.
