Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent member of GERB, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Through a personal post, Todorov stated his decision was to dedicate his full attention to the development of Stara Zagora. He thanked his colleagues for their joint efforts and expressed his commitment to focusing solely on the city’s progress.

Todorov’s departure follows a period of political activity for GERB, which recorded its lowest result of 13.38% in the recent snap parliamentary elections. Days after the vote, Todorov participated in a press conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where the party emphasized the need to maintain its right-wing and anti-corruption image. This announcement occurred shortly after Todorov had been re-elected to the Commission, while the party’s National Assembly unanimously reaffirmed Borissov as the party leader.

Borissov had previously announced that Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas would operate in a coordinated tandem supporting the party structures. In response to Todorov’s announcement, GERB issued a statement accepting the move as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party acknowledged Todorov’s significant contributions as a mayor within GERB, noting that much had been achieved for Stara Zagora through their joint work. The statement concluded by mentioning that GERB had conducted an internal analysis to identify areas needing improvement within the party’s operations.
