Zhivko Todorov, a long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within GERB, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission, the organization’s highest executive body. Todorov stated his decision via a Facebook post, indicating a desire to dedicate his full attention exclusively to the development of Stara Zagora. He wrote, “I have always been a person who can take responsibility.
That is why I am stepping down as a member of GERB’s Executive Commission. I will devote my energy and full attention to the development of Stara Zagora. I thank all my colleagues for our joint work and wish them success.”
Todorov’s departure follows GERB’s performance in the snap parliamentary elections held in April, where the party recorded its lowest result at 13.38%.
Shortly after the election, Todorov appeared at a news conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where they outlined the party’s future plans, emphasizing that GERB needed to maintain its right-wing and anti-corruption profile. Previously, Todorov had been re-elected to the Executive Commission, while GERB’s National Assembly had unanimously reaffirmed Boyko Borissov’s leadership. Borissov announced that Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, would form a tandem to support the party structures.
In response to Todorov’s announcement, GERB acknowledged his decision via a Facebook post, characterizing it as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party noted that Todorov had been one of GERB’s most successful mayors, contributing significantly to the progress of Stara Zagora. GERB also stated that it had conducted an analysis to identify areas needing improvement within the party’s operations.
