Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent member of the GERB party, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Through a personal statement, Todorov cited a desire to dedicate his full attention to the continued development of Stara Zagora as the primary reason for his departure. Todorov’s decision follows a period of political activity for GERB, which recorded a 13.38% result in the recent snap parliamentary elections.

Just days after the vote, Todorov appeared alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, reaffirming the party’s commitment to maintaining a right-wing and anti-corruption stance. The announcement comes despite Todorov having recently been re-elected to the Executive Commission, while the party’s leadership confirmed Boyko Borissov’s status as party leader. Borissov subsequently announced a new working structure, positioning Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, in a tandem role to collaborate with party structures.

In response to Todorov’s move, GERB acknowledged his decision via a statement, accepting it as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party commended Todorov’s contributions, particularly his work in Stara Zagora, while also noting that the organization had conducted an internal analysis to identify areas needing improvement. The departure signals a shift in the political focus for Todorov, channeling his efforts directly into local governance in Zagora.
