Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent member of the GERB party, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. Todorov confirmed his decision via a personal Facebook post, stating that his focus will now be dedicated entirely to the development of Stara Zagora. He thanked his colleagues for their collaborative work and wished them success in their future endeavors.

Todorov’s departure comes amidst a period of political activity for GERB, which recorded a 13.38% result in the recent snap parliamentary elections. Just days after the vote, Todorov appeared alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where the party emphasized the need to preserve its right-wing and anti-corruption standing. The announcement marks a shift following recent party developments, as Todorov had only recently been re-elected to the Executive Commission.

GERB’s highest body, the National Assembly, had previously confirmed Boyko Borissov as party leader, and Borissov had announced that Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, would collaborate on party structures. In response to Todorov’s announcement, GERB issued a statement accepting his resignation as “a personal act of responsibility.” The party acknowledged his significant contributions, noting that he had been one of GERB’s most successful mayors and that much had been achieved for Stara Zagora through their joint efforts. The statement concluded by mentioning that GERB has undertaken an analysis to identify areas for improvement within the party’s operations.
