2, 1974: Fashion Show in Ruse Presents 300 New Models

On May 2, 1974, a fashion show took place in Ruse on the Danube River, featuring 300 new models presented by several prominent Bulgarian manufacturing enterprises. According to preserved archive photos from BTA, the event also included a performance by young pop singer Tanya Emilova. The participating fashion houses included Boriana from Cherven Bryag, Arda from Ruse, Sanya from Pleven, Burya from Gabrovo, Druzhba from Varna, Mizia from Pleven, and Bulgaria itself, represented in Plovdiv.

The participating companies have distinct histories. Boriana, based in Cherven Bryag (Northern Bulgaria), was established in 1968. Arda, an iconic clothing manufacturer located in Ruse (Northeastern Bulgaria), was founded in 1932, and the company opened a new factory building in the city center in 1968.

Sanya’s textile factory in Pleven (Northern Bulgaria) had a conceptual expansion project approved by the Council of Ministers of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria in 1972. Mizia was founded in 1960. During the period of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1989), the entire fashion and textile manufacturing sector operated under state ownership and central planning.

The industry’s focus was on achieving mass production intended for both the domestic market and for export to other Eastern Bloc (Comecon) nations, with a primary focus on the Soviet Union. The 1974 show in Ruse serves as a documented example of the scale and scope of Bulgarian fashion at that time.
