Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized approximately 363 kg of marijuana from a lorry transporting washing machines, according to the Customs Agency on Friday. The seized narcotic substance is estimated to be worth around EUR 3 million at judicial prices. The incident occurred on Thursday when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, entered the outbound lane from Romania at the Lesovo border crossing.
During the customs control process, the Turkish national driver presented documentation indicating the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria, and he declared no other goods. A comprehensive customs inspection was conducted. During this process, officers discovered 25 boxes situated atop the declared washing machines.
These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry green leafy substance. Field drug tests performed on the material yielded positive results for marijuana. In total, 362 kg of marijuana was seized.
The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated regarding the case. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is scheduled to submit a request to the court for the imposition of a detention measure in custody.
