Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized nearly 363 kg of marijuana on Friday. The narcotics were discovered in a lorry that was transporting washing machines. According to the Customs Agency, the seized substance is valued at approximately EUR 3 million at judicial prices.
The incident occurred on Thursday when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound lane from Romania. Within the customs control area, the driver, a Turkish national, presented documentation indicating that the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria. He declared that there were no other items to declare.
During a comprehensive customs inspection, officers discovered twenty-five boxes situated atop the declared washing machines. These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry green leafy substance. Field drug tests conducted on the contents yielded positive results for marijuana.
A total gross weight of 362 kg of marijuana was subsequently seized. The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have commenced in the case. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is scheduled to file a request with the court for the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody.
