Customs officers operating at the Lesovo border crossing seized a substantial quantity of narcotics from a commercial vehicle on Friday, according to the Customs Agency. The seizure involved approximately 362 kg of marijuana, which is estimated to be valued at around EUR 3 million at judicial prices. The incident occurred after a lorry bearing Romanian registration arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound lane from Romania on Thursday.
The driver, identified as a Turkish national, presented documentation asserting that the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria, and he declared nothing else for inspection. During a thorough customs inspection, officers discovered 25 boxes placed atop the declared washing machines. These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry, green leafy substance.
Field drug tests conducted on the contents of these packages yielded positive results for marijuana. Following the discovery, the driver was detained, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in connection with the find. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is scheduled to submit a formal request to the court for the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody.
The operation highlights ongoing efforts to secure the border and intercept illicit goods at the Lesovo crossing.
