363 Kg Marijuana Worth EUR 3 Mln Seized at Lesovo Border Crossing

Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized a substantial quantity of marijuana from a lorry on Friday, according to the Customs Agency. The narcotic substance, valued at approximately EUR 3 million at judicial prices, was discovered during routine inspections. The incident occurred on Thursday when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound route from the country.

The driver, identified as a Turkish national, presented documentation asserting that the vehicle was transporting washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria, and declared that there were no other goods to report. During a comprehensive customs inspection, officers discovered 25 boxes concealed atop the declared washing machines within the cargo. These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry green leafy substance.

Field drug testing conducted on the contents yielded positive results for marijuana. Authorities subsequently seized a total weight of 362 kg of the substance. The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated concerning the seizure.

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is expected to submit a formal request to the court for the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody. The discovery highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to secure the border against illicit trafficking.
