Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The event took place in Boris Garden Park, utilizing the Prominent Bulgarians alley as the setting. Divided into teams, the students engaged in an interactive educational activity that required them to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes.

Throughout the course, participants answered questions pertaining to Bulgarian history. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, responsible for education and urban development, stated that the initiative aimed to mark 150 years of a significant act of courage, encouraging students to experience history beyond traditional classroom settings. The routes followed by the participants linked various monuments honoring key revolutionaries, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.

By successfully answering historical questions, the teams collected pieces of a symbolic map representing the uprising. The concept for the game was developed with the involvement of history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in collaboration with the Sofia Regional Education Directorate. At the conclusion of the educational walk, each team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the historical knowledge they had acquired.

The activity successfully guided the participating students through the footsteps of Bulgaria’s historical figures.
