Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event, held in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley. The initiative engaged groups of students in an educational activity designed to immerse them in Bulgarian history.

Divided into teams, the participants followed routes linking key monuments dedicated to national heroes. Their activities involved answering questions related to Bulgarian history while searching for these historical markers. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, noted that the event serves to mark 150 years of a significant act of courage, thereby motivating students to connect with history beyond traditional classroom settings.

The curated paths guided the students through the legacies of revolutionaries, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. As they navigated the site, the students collected pieces of a symbolic map representing the uprising by correctly answering historical queries. Upon completing the walk, each team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, drawing inspiration from the knowledge they gained.

The game concept was developed in collaboration with history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. This structured experience allowed the students to trace the footsteps of the nation’s heroes, reinforcing historical awareness through interactive learning.
