Sofia Municipality hosted the historical game, “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The initiative engaged local students in an immersive educational experience, transforming history into an interactive activity. Along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, participating teams of students navigated a route designed to familiarize them with national figures.
The game required participants to locate monuments dedicated to Bulgarian heroes and answer questions concerning Bulgarian history. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event serves to motivate students by allowing them to experience history beyond traditional classroom settings, marking a significant act of national courage. The planned itinerary guided the students through locations honoring revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.
As they followed the metaphorical footsteps of these figures, the teams collected fragments that pieced together a symbolic map representing the uprising. Upon completing the walk, each team composed a message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the historical knowledge gained. The concept behind the game was developed with the collaboration of history teacher Emil Jassim and is integrated into Sofia Municipality’s broader cultural program, executed in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.
The event successfully blended civic commemoration with practical learning, ensuring that the legacy of the nation’s heroes remains a tangible part of the educational journey for the younger generation.
