The development of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of Bulgaria’s largest planned infrastructure investments for the coming years. According to local officials, the new facility is designed to significantly enhance the capacity and connectivity of the airport. The proposed terminal will cover approximately 65,000 square meters and will connect with the existing Terminal 2, aiming to service up to 20 million passengers annually.
The scope of the project extends beyond the new terminal structure to include the creation of an integrated transport hub and improvements to city links connecting to Sofia. Construction is anticipated to commence in the coming years, with completion projected around 2030–2031. The initiative is viewed as a major catalyst for the region’s economic development.
Beyond its physical scale, the project is positioned to enhance Bulgaria’s appeal as a destination, symbolizing opportunities for future growth within the capital. The formal process for the development began in November 2025, when SOF Connect announced the start of the pre-qualification stage for the tender procedure. This tender covers the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, the associated forecourt area, a transport center, and the modernization of the current Terminal 2 at the Sofia airport.
This major infrastructure upgrade is expected to solidify the role of the airport as a key gateway for business and tourism entering Bulgaria.
