Mayor: Terminal 3 of Sofia Airport Could Become Symbol of Returning to Bulgaria

The planned construction of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of Bulgaria’s most significant upcoming infrastructure investments. According to recent announcements, the proposed facility is designed to cover approximately 65,000 square meters and will integrate with the existing Terminal 2, aiming to accommodate up to 20 million passengers annually. The overall development plan extends beyond the terminal itself, incorporating a new transport hub and enhanced connectivity links with the city of Sofia.

Construction is projected to commence in the coming years, with completion anticipated around 2030–2031. The strategic importance of the project is framed by its potential to symbolize both the return to Bulgaria and the economic opportunities available within the capital. In preparation for the development, SOF Connect initiated the pre-qualification stage in November 2025.

This tender procedure covers the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, the associated forecourt area, a comprehensive transport center, and the modernization of the current Terminal 2 facilities at the Sofia airport. This major infrastructure upgrade is positioned to enhance the functionality of the gateway to Bulgaria. The new terminal is intended to serve as a modern centerpiece for Sofia, supporting sustained growth and facilitating increased international connectivity for the nation.
