Gurov Sees Conspiracy against Interior Ministry Secretary General

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly stated his and the government’s full support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Gurov asserted that the public backing for Kandev is broad. These comments followed a statement from Kandev, who claimed he faced pressure to resign after individuals, including a person known as “Kartofa,” allegedly provided false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.

In his remarks, Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism” and a conspiracy targeting the Secretary General. The Prime Minister indicated that this alleged plot surfaced after efforts were made to curb actions undermining democratic processes and election integrity. Gurov specified that the conspiracy involves a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa.” He further directed attention toward prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, alleging that the controversy is unfolding at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.

Adding to the context, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev previously reported that in 2021, Rusinova was documented traveling with Petyo Petrov to North Macedonia. Dechev’s information suggested that Rusinova repeatedly crossed the border during these trips, accompanied by several individuals who sometimes included Petrov. Gurov issued a strong statement to perceived political opponents, declaring that the government was aware of their actions.
