, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors on Friday of being used to target officials involved in institutional reform. This statement followed claims by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who stated he was facing pressure and being subjected to false testimony regarding unspecified wrongdoing. Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev contended that this model continues to function, and the prosecution is once again being used against reformers.

His comments followed Kandev’s Facebook video where he detailed receiving calls from unknown numbers alleging false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, which he believes aims to force his resignation. Mirchev suggested that the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov is retaliatory. The party further announced that they had submitted an alert to the prosecution service regarding a journalistic investigation by BIRD.

This investigation alleged recordings of conversations involving former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary concerning bribes for court decisions. Bozhanov and Mirchev criticized the court and Cholakov, demanding immediate investigation. They called for thorough checks of related reports and reviews of assets for senior magistrates, including acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov and Cholakov.

Furthermore, Yes, Bulgaria plans to request a parliamentary hearing regarding media reports suggesting Delyan Peevski used private jets abroad without declaring the travel in his financial interests statement.
