363 Kg Marijuana Worth EUR 3 Mln Seized at Lesovo Border Crossing

Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized nearly 363 kg of marijuana from a lorry transporting washing machines, according to the Customs Agency on Friday. The narcotic substance has an estimated judicial value of approximately EUR 3 million. The incident occurred on Thursday when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound lane from Romania.

In the customs control area, the driver, identified as a Turkish national, submitted documentation indicating the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria. The driver declared that there were no other items to declare. During a comprehensive customs inspection, officers discovered 25 boxes positioned atop the declared washing machines within the cargo.

These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry, green, leafy substance. Field drug testing confirmed a positive reaction for marijuana on the contents of these packages. A total of 362 kg of marijuana was subsequently seized.

The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have commenced regarding the case. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is scheduled to file a request with the court seeking the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody.
