Police Detain Man for Illegal Fishing of Soft-shell Clams at Elenite Resort

The Executive Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture (EAFA) reported on Monday that an enforcement action was taken against an individual involved in the illegal harvesting of Mya arenaria, commonly known as soft-shell clams, near the Elenite resort area. Border Police officers, collaborating with EAFA control bodies, detained a vessel in the Black Sea waters on Sunday. During the inspection, authorities recovered approximately 150 kilograms of the soft-shell clams from the boat.

The vessel was noted to lack any identifying numbers or external markings. Following the retrieval, the seized clams were promptly returned to the marine environment. An administrative act was filed against the owner of the vessel for violating established provisions of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act.

EAFA officials emphasized the agency’s commitment to stringent oversight of the soft-shell clam fishery. They stated that routine joint inspections are consistently conducted along the entire Black Sea coastline. These regular patrols are designed to curb poaching activities and ensure the preservation of vital marine biological resources.

The agency highlighted that maintaining strict control over the collection of these valuable shellfish is a priority measure to protect the local ecosystem.
