Accident Numbers Down in First Months of 2026, Says Labour Inspectorate Executive Director

As of mid-April 2026, the General Labour Inspectorate reported a decrease in the overall number of workplace accidents. According to Executive Director Ekaterina Asenova, a total of 126 workplace accidents had been reported through this period, compared to 157 recorded during the same timeframe in 2025. Fatal workplace accidents were reported at 26, representing a decline from 36 in the corresponding period of 2025.

Non-traumatic fatal incidents also saw a reduction, totaling 14 cases against 19 in the previous year. Asenova noted that statistics indicate that 90% of workplace accidents are preventable if occupational safety rules are adhered to. She cited common causes, including crushing, entrapment, falls from height, and being struck by falling objects.

As of mid-April 2026, the sectors identified as high-risk remain construction, crop and livestock farming, the manufacture of metal products (excluding machinery and equipment), and trade. Increased inspection efforts in construction yielded positive results, reducing reported accidents from 12 by mid-April 2025 to six in April 2026. Furthermore, land transport showed a significant decrease, reporting zero accidents in 2026 compared to four in 2025.
