Elected Parliament Holds Inaugural Sitting

The 52nd National Assembly of Bulgaria is scheduled to convene for its inaugural sitting on April 30. President Iliana Iotova issued a decree calling the 240-seat parliament to its first session at 10:00 am. During this initial sitting, the President is set to address the newly elected members of parliament.

The ceremonial proceedings will begin with the oldest MP present, Rumen Milanov of Progressive Bulgaria, opening the session. Following this, the elected deputies will take the official oath, swearing allegiance to the Constitution and the laws of Bulgaria. After the oath and signing of documents, the Bulgarian and European national anthems will be played.

By tradition, the various parties and coalitions represented in the National Assembly will subsequently make statements. The agenda will proceed with the election of the Chair of the National Assembly, who will then preside over the session and address the body. Additionally, the MPs will elect the Deputy Chairs, and the Chair will announce the formation and leadership of the parliamentary groups.

The composition of the new parliament was finalized following the early elections on April 19. The Central Election Commission (CEC) announced the seat distribution, showing Progressive Bulgaria securing 131 seats, followed by GERB–UDF with 39, Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria with 37, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms with 21, and Vazrazhdane with 12. The CEC reports that the newly elected body comprises 57 women and 183 men.

In developments preceding the sitting, Continue the Change proposed a joint parliamentary alliance with Democratic Bulgaria under the banner “A Strong Bulgaria in a Strong Europe,” while planning to maintain two distinct parliamentary groups.
