During a session of the Sofia Municipal Council, Spasi Sofia Chair Boris Bonev criticized a proposed report concerning properties in the Mladost district of Sofia. Bonev characterized the plan, which involves constructing a 22-story building with approximately 60,000 square meters of gross floor area, as being part of what he termed a “scandalous and corrupt” decision. He alleged that the development proposal was being advanced quietly and smoothly, contrary to the public interest.
Bonev argued that the scale of the proposed building at a major intersection in Mladost represented a significant act of corruption that would negatively impact local residents. He stated that the electorate in the district has historically favored representatives who advocate against excessive overdevelopment. Adding to the critique, Spasi Sofia municipal councillor and architect Rositsa Nikolova noted that the Sofia Municipality reportedly owns 92% of the property, while the private owner holds only 8%.
She contended that this ownership ratio logically mandates that the municipality should dictate the terms and conditions for any future development. Bonev also criticized political entities expected to support the proposal, as well as Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, for failing to take a public stance. Furthermore, he pointed out that the submitted report closely mirrored a proposal from a previous political term, which had been withdrawn following public opposition.
Bonev suggested that the current governance climate allowed for actions perceived as exploitative.
