PM Says His Party May Stay in Government If No-Confidence Motion Passes

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a no-confidence motion pass against his administration, the primary option for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain within the government structure, though not in a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the PNL could alternatively transition into the opposition to establish a “pole of modernization” alongside other political entities. Speaking to Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister stressed that the continuation of reforms is mandatory regardless of which political group assumes power.

He highlighted the fiscal improvements, noting that public budget revenues increased by 12% and expenditures decreased by 3% in the 10 months following the implementation of strict austerity measures. Bolojan criticized past spending habits, stating that the state budget was often used improperly by inefficient administrations. He asserted that his actions stemmed from a refusal to be a compliant leader and a commitment to preventing the misuse of public funds.

When questioned about a potential run for the presidency, Bolojan stated that he remains an active individual committed to what he deems right for Romania, adding that he could have sought the office when previous opportunities existed. The no-confidence vote is scheduled for May 5th, having been filed by the PSD, the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the MIR parliamentary group. This development followed the PSD withdrawing its support from the Prime Minister, who leads his party.

The current coalition government, comprising the PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR, took office last June.

  1. It seems the party plans to maintain a presence in the government even if the current coalition structure dissolves.
