Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a no-confidence motion against his administration pass, the primary option for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain in the government, but outside of a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the party is prepared for alternative scenarios, including moving into opposition to form a “pole of modernization” alongside other political forces. Speaking in an interview with Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that reform efforts must continue regardless of who assumes power.
He cited fiscal improvements, noting that after implementing strict austerity measures, public budget revenues increased by 12% while expenditures decreased by 3% over the last ten months. Bolojan explained that prior practices allowed the state budget to function as an “inefficient piggy bank,” necessitating the establishment of strict rules, much like a family managing limited funds. He added that he had become a political target because his refusal to be a compliant leader and his efforts to prevent the misuse of public funds led to opposition.
Regarding future roles, when asked about running for President, Bolojan responded that he remains an active individual committed to doing what is right for Romania, suggesting that if the opportunity arose, he would consider it. The no-confidence vote is scheduled for May 5. It was tabled by the PSD, the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the MIR parliamentary group.
This action followed the PSD’s withdrawal of support from the Prime Minister, who leads the PNL. The initial coalition government, comprising the PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR, took office last year.
