Kiril Valchev, Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), stated that discussions surrounding the April Uprising commemorate the sacrifices made for Bulgaria’s freedom. He made these remarks at the opening of a conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising at the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concludes a series of discussions hosted by BTA across the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as in Ruse and Giurgiu.
Valchev noted that the talks emphasized several key lessons from the April Uprising, particularly the necessity of establishing clear, overarching goals before undertaking difficult steps. He highlighted that the historical narrative suggests that periods deemed failures ultimately contributed to Bulgaria’s success and freedom. Furthermore, he drew parallels between this historical resilience and the concept of salvation, noting the significant role media can play in shaping public opinion and national outcomes, as was the case following the April Uprising across Europe.
The discussions drew from historical sources, including excerpts from Zahari Stoyanov’s Notes on the Bulgarian Uprisings. Valchev cited these writings to advise leaders on the importance of remaining active, avoiding personal gain, and guiding their followers away from despair. The preparatory events preceding the final conference included memorial tributes in Giurgiu and Ruse, and the presentation of special publications by BTA concerning the April Uprising.
