A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue regarding the significance of the uprising. Attendees included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.
Georgi Valchev, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Museum Director Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov.
BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions on the April Uprising serve to keep the memory of martyrs for Bulgarian freedom alive. He noted that the talks spanned the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized the consensus reached: the necessity of establishing overarching goals before tackling difficult steps.
He also announced that the 2026 BTA Media Meeting will focus on “Media and Leaders” in Hungary. BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s role in connecting with the public during these discussions, asserting that media influence is crucial in shaping public opinion. He cautioned that national pride must be responsibly cultivated, as it can be manipulated.
Prof. Valchev urged viewing history as a living subject, arguing that the 1876 uprising demonstrated a desire for self-determination. He highlighted that belief in the future and the involvement of the younger generation were key lessons.
Mayor Gagov called for the anniversary to prompt reflection on unity and national pride, urging Bulgarians to honor the legacy of ordinary people who became heroes. Boyko Vassilev pointed to journalists like Zahari Stoyanov, Hristo Botev, and Januarius MacGahan for their lasting impact. He concluded that the April Uprising represents an enduring aspect of Bulgarian public life.
