On 150th Anniversary of April Uprising Held in Panagyurishte

A conference commemorating the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue surrounding the anniversary. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.

Georgi Valchev, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, Boyko Vassilev, and Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov.

BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions about the April Uprising revitalize the memory of those who sacrificed for Bulgarian freedom. He noted that the discussions took place in the press clubs of the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu. Valchev emphasized that a key takeaway was the need to define overarching goals before tackling difficult steps.

He announced that the 2026 Meeting of Bulgarian Media, organized by BTA, will focus on “Media and Leaders” in Hungary. BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s crucial role in connecting with the public, noting that learning from the April Uprising involves recognizing the hope and willingness to sacrifice that fueled its narrative. He cautioned that national pride must be cultivated responsibly, as it is susceptible to manipulation.

Prof. Valchev urged viewing history as a living subject, moving beyond mere slogans. He highlighted that the 1876 uprising demonstrated the desire of Bulgarians to control their destiny, and that believing in the youth was a key lesson.

Mayor Gagov suggested the anniversary should prompt reflection on unity and national pride, urging people to honor the legacy of ordinary citizens who became heroes.
