Bulgarians Say Transition to Euro Is Smooth, Eurobarometer Finds

A recent Eurobarometer survey presented by the European Commission indicates that a majority of Bulgarians (62%) believe the transition from the lev to the euro is progressing smoothly. Regarding the adoption of the European currency, 49% of respondents view the introduction of the euro as beneficial for Bulgaria, while 43% hold a contrary view. On a broader level, 67% of Bulgarians feel the euro is positive for the European Union.

However, concerns regarding economic stability persist; 66% of Bulgarians anticipate that the euro will increase inflation, compared to 21% who believe the common currency will help maintain price stability. Expectations for the overall effect of the euro on Bulgaria are mixed, with 47% predicting a positive impact and 44% expressing reservations. On a personal level, 46% anticipate positive effects, while 42% foresee negative consequences for themselves.

In a separate report, the European Commission advised Bulgarian authorities to maintain intensive price monitoring during the transition. The recommendations emphasize the need to ensure accurate price display, limit unjustified price hikes, and rigorously enforce consumer protection and competition laws. Furthermore, the report suggests that future euro area enlargements should adopt sustained and intensive monitoring.

The Commission also proposed considering voluntary business conduct guidelines and extending the dual pricing period to one year. The findings underscore that robust communication and public awareness campaigns are crucial for a smooth transition. For other nations adopting the euro, the report suggests that providing businesses with various denominations of physical coins, rather than just “starter kits,” could be a helpful measure.
