CEO Vijay Joshi: India Can Take Inspiration From How BTA Popularizes Bulgarian Culture

Vijay Joshi, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of India’s Press Trust of India (PTI), recently visited Tryavna, Bulgaria, where he observed the launch of the Bulgarian News Agency’s (BTA) initiative, “Pencho Slaveykov Today.” This program commemorates the 160th birth anniversary of the poet Pencho Slaveykov, a significant figure in Bulgarian modernism. Joshi commended BTA’s approach, noting that its partnership with local communities to preserve and promote national culture provides a valuable model. He expressed hope that, through the collaboration between the national news agencies of India and Bulgaria, Slaveykov’s work could gain recognition in India.

During the event at the Slaveykov House Museum, which was moderated by scholar Yordan Eftimov, Joshi praised the initiative as an excellent means of cultural preservation. This visit marked Joshi’s second trip to Bulgaria. Following the literary discussion, he toured local sites, including the Daskalov House and the Museum of Asian and African Art, alongside BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev.

The professional relationship between PTI and BTA is formalized through an agreement facilitating news exchange. Furthermore, the two agencies collaborate within MINDS International, a global association comprising 25 major news outlets, including Reuters and Associated Press. This cooperation was recently highlighted when Joshi and Valchev participated in the MINDS conference in Vienna.

The visit to Bulgaria followed this international gathering, during which Joshi also visited BTA’s national press clubs in Belgrade and Skopje, solidifying the mutual exchange of information services between the two nations.
