Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, opened at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.

The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The collection features over 130 historical documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials comprehensively illustrate the preparation, progression, suppression, and subsequent consequences of the April Uprising.

The exhibit provides insight into the international response to the revolt, while incorporated Ottoman documents offer perspectives from both the local and central Ottoman authorities. The documented period features prominent historical figures such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The exhibition presents a mix of well-known and lesser-documented materials, some of which are being displayed for the first time.

The scope of the display traces events across all revolutionary districts and examines the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international reaction. The cultural commemoration was formally inaugurated in Sofia on April 20. The exhibition is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and receives financial support from the Ministry of Culture.

The display serves as a significant historical resource, documenting the profound impact and legacy of the uprising on Bulgarian national identity and history.
