He noted that during the challenging period following the uprising, many ancestors faced a choice between life and their Orthodox faith, choosing the latter.
The Patriarch affirmed that the Church continues to honor the heroes of this day, offering prayers for all who perished defending both their faith and the nation’s freedom. He added that the self-sacrifice of these individuals successfully garnered attention from international public opinion, the great powers of the time, and ultimately, divine mercy. In his blessing, Patriarch Daniil invoked prayers for the martyrs, emphasizing that upholding the Orthodox faith—which teaches valor, honesty, and sacrificial love—is crucial for Bulgaria’s continued existence.
The memorial service was attended by high-ranking officials, including President Iliana Iotova, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, and the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Evelina Slavcheva. Following the ceremony, Patriarch Daniil and President Iotova led a procession to the BAS building for a national commemorative assembly marking the 150th anniversary of the uprising.
