Director General: By Organizing Talks about April Uprising, BTA Took Step towards People

Speaking at a conference concerning the April Uprising, Milen Mitev, Director General of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), stated that BTA’s organization of the discussions was a significant effort by the media to connect with the public. He noted that in the current environment, media outlets must proactively engage their audience to remain useful. This event concluded a series of conferences held by BTA commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.

Mitev further argued that a thorough assessment of the current situation requires understanding both international contexts and national history. He asserted that only by placing themselves within a broader historical framework can people recognize the progress achieved. He underlined the critical influence of the media in shaping public opinion throughout this process.

Drawing lessons from the participants of the April Uprising, he pointed to their foundational hope and willingness to make sacrifices for their cause. The Director emphasized the historical weight of the April Uprising, calling it an epoch-making event and a crucial link in the chain leading to the establishment of an independent Bulgarian state. However, Mitev cautioned that national pride is susceptible to manipulation, much like history itself.

Therefore, he argued that the responsibility falls upon the media and scholars to cultivate national self-esteem. This cultivation, he specified, should be a constructive pride in the nation’s history and accomplishments, aimed at continuous improvement rather than mere assertion of superiority.
