Director General: By Organizing Talks about April Uprising, BTA Took Step towards People

Speaking at a conference concerning the April Uprising, Milen Mitev, the Director General of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), stated that the organization of discussions by BTA represented an important effort by the media to connect with the public. Mitev noted that in the contemporary world, media outlets must take the initiative to remain maximally useful to their audiences. This event marked the conclusion of a series of conferences hosted by BTA commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.

Mitev further asserted that understanding one’s current standing requires placing the nation within a broader historical context, necessitating an examination of both international events and domestic history. He emphasized the critical role of the media in this process, given its influence on public opinion. According to the director, the participants of the April Uprising exemplified the foundational elements of significant narratives: unwavering hope and a readiness to make sacrifices.

He framed the April Uprising as an epoch-making Bulgarian event and a vital link in the chain of progress toward establishing a free and independent Bulgarian state. Mitev cautioned that national pride must be cultivated responsibly, arguing that both history and national pride are frequently subject to manipulation. He concluded by stressing that the responsibility lies with the media and scholars to build national self-esteem—not in terms of superiority, but in fostering pride regarding the nation’s history and achievements while actively working toward future improvement.
