Employment at AES Galabovo Power Plant Will Depend on Evolving Operations, AES Bulgaria Says

AES Bulgaria announced on Friday that it must initiate a controlled and safe shutdown of the Galabovo plant, placing it into a conservation mode. This action is necessitated by the expiration of the long-term power purchase agreement between TPP AES Galabovo and the National Electricity Company (NEK). According to the company’s statement, this approach is deemed responsible for safeguarding the plant and maintaining potential for future operations.

The announcement addresses reports from regional labor offices on Thursday regarding potential mass layoffs at the facility. AES Bulgaria stated that future employment at the plant will be contingent upon its evolving operational status, confirming that the company has maintained transparent communication with staff throughout the conservation process, ensuring respectful treatment for those affected by the changes. Furthermore, AES Bulgaria confirmed that it has notified Mini Maritsa-East, as its contract for supplying lignite coal for electricity generation is also due to expire concurrently.

The company emphasized its ongoing dialogue with Bulgarian authorities and relevant stakeholders to identify potential development opportunities. These opportunities aim to enable the AES Galabovo Thermal Power Plant to continue contributing to Bulgaria’s energy security and grid reliability. AES also clarified that these operational changes do not impact the Saint Nikola Wind Farm in Kavarna, which remains part of the investor’s portfolio.
