‘ Expectations of New Parliament

As Bulgaria’s 52nd National Assembly convened for its inaugural session, numerous MPs and party leaders addressed journalists regarding their expectations for the legislative session, the election of the Assembly Chair, and the formation of a new cabinet. Rumen Radev, leader of the Progressive Bulgaria (PB) coalition, stated that finalizing the government structure by May 15 is crucial due to the volume of pending reforms. He identified the state’s finances as a primary concern for his group, alongside prioritizing the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council.

Radev also addressed the difficulty of dismantling the existing “oligarchic model” within government and the judiciary. Caretaker PM Andrey Gurov expressed his expectation that the incoming government would demonstrate strong principles, noting that public demands for better governance in Bulgaria remain high. He highlighted the accomplishments of the caretaker cabinet in demonstrating improved integrity in national governance.

Other political figures outlined their priorities. Tomislav Donchev of GERB-UDF emphasized cabinet formation and the adoption of the 2026 budget as paramount tasks. Meanwhile, Ivaylo Mirchev of Yes, Bulgaria noted that despite internal changes within the CC-DB bloc, the elected MPs would fulfill their duties, stressing the need for unity for future presidential elections.

Leaders from other factions focused on oversight and reform. Assen Vassilev prioritized the urgent election of the Supreme Judicial Council. Atanas Atanassov indicated that the opposition’s focus would be on implementing judicial reforms and closely monitoring the conduct of power-holders.

Overall, the discussions reflected varied expectations for the path forward for Bulgaria, centering on institutional reform and governmental stability.
