Justice Minister Yankulov Urges Immediate Removal of Acting Prosecutor General, Calls for Swift Judicial Reform

Caretaker Justice Minister Andrey Yankulov stated on Monday that the judicial system should not remain under the leadership of an acting Prosecutor General who, according to him, operates contrary to law and morality. In a Facebook post, Yankulov commented that the recent elections clearly established a winner in Progressive Bulgaria and significant losses for established political groups associated with the judiciary’s perceived corruption. Yankulov emphasized that translating the public’s strong support for judicial reform into concrete political action is a critical issue for Bulgaria’s future.

He noted that the poor electoral showing for parties invested in maintaining the status quo suggests citizens view reform as inevitable. He stated, “I would like to believe that restoring legality in the running of the prosecution service will be the first small step of change.”

According to the Justice Minister, this initial step should not be delayed pending the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) composition. While a swift SJC election is important, Yankulov stressed that process must prioritize correctness over speed.

He argued that safeguards must ensure the selection of honest professionals dedicated to an independent, rather than party-controlled, judicial system. Furthermore, Yankulov suggested that the SJC and its Prosecutors’ College had ample opportunity over the past two months to recognize the changing environment, noting they appeared to be “trying to preserve what cannot be preserved.” He concluded that if they fail to act with professional dignity, the new parliament could address the issue through ordinary legislative action early in its session.
