Launches National Series on Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism

The Bulgarian Tourism Agency (BTA) initiated a nationwide series of discussions across national press clubs marking the 160th anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and the era of Bulgarian modernism. The commemoration began in Tryavna, Slaveykov’s hometown, at the Slaveykov House Museum. Furthermore, the December issue of LIK magazine will reflect the campaign with reports from the discussions and a special section featuring 160 contributions of 160 words each.

During the launch, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that Pencho Slaveykov embodies the modern individual—one who embraces new ideas while pursuing spiritual growth and universal values without abandoning national identity. Valchev highlighted that Slaveykov’s work was influenced by his father, Petko Slaveykov, and the struggles for Bulgarian liberation, noting that the poet was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1912. Literary scholar Yordan Eftimov emphasized that the initiative aims to create a national self-portrait through new interpretations of familiar works, helping Bulgarians better understand their culture amidst misinformation.

Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev described Slaveykov as a profound observer of the national character and a figure who advocated for elevated artistic standards.
