Launches National Series on Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism

The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) initiated a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs to mark the 160th birth anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and to highlight the themes of Bulgarian modernism. The inaugural event, titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” was held at the Slaveykov House Museum in his hometown of Tryavna. The December issue of LIK magazine will document the campaign, including reports from the discussions and a special section featuring 160 individual contributions.

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that Slaveykov provides a model for the modern individual: one who embraces new ideas while pursuing spiritual growth and universal values without abandoning national identity or tradition. Valchev noted that Slaveykov’s life and work were shaped by his father, Petko Slaveykov, and the struggles for Bulgaria’s liberation. Literary scholar Yordan Eftimov emphasized that one goal of these initiatives is to create a national self-portrait through new interpretations of established works, thereby helping Bulgarians better understand themselves.

He highlighted BTA’s role in disseminating expert views amid misinformation. Tryavna Mayor Dencho Minev described Slaveykov as a profound observer of the national character and a critical voice who advanced higher artistic standards. International observers noted the initiative’s value.

Vijay Joshi, CEO of India’s PTI, suggested that the BTA’s partnership with local communities to preserve and promote culture could serve as an inspiration for other national agencies. Pencho Slaveykov’s enduring legacy, which continues to inspire discourse on modern Bulgarian identity, underscores the cultural importance of his contributions.
