Bulgaria’s development saw several significant milestones across the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A key early development occurred in 1859 when the first Bulgarian secondary school abroad was established in Bolhrad, Bessarabia (present-day Ukraine). The push for modernization continued, leading to the opening of the first medical treatment facility, Aleksandrovska Hospital, in Sofia in 1879.

The growth of cultural institutions was further marked in 1888 with the founding of the Sofia Zoo by royal decree, which remains noted as the oldest and largest in the Balkans. Earlier political turbulence is also recorded, such as the outbreak of the April Uprising against Ottoman rule in 1876. Later in the 20th century, the nation passed legislative milestones, including the passage of the Protection of Competition Act by the Seventh Grand National Assembly in 1991.

More recently, in 2013, the new five-euro banknote was put into circulation, featuring the designation “euro” written in the Cyrillic alphabet. These historical markers illustrate periods of educational, medical, and civic expansion within the country, with Sofia serving as a central point for many of these advancements.
