Bulgarian history is marked by several significant institutional and political milestones. A key moment in national struggle occurred in 1876 with the outbreak of the April Uprising against Ottoman rule. The development of Bulgarian education and civic life saw notable early achievements.

In 1859, the first Bulgarian secondary school abroad opens in Bolhrad, Bessarabia (now in Ukraine). Culturally and medically, the city of Sofia experienced major growth. In 1879, the Aleksandrovska Hospital, the first major medical treatment facility, opens in Sofia.

Furthermore, the city’s cultural landscape expanded significantly in 1888 when the Sofia Zoo was established by royal decree, becoming recognized as one of the oldest and largest zoos in the Balkans. Modern legal and economic developments continue to shape the nation. In 1991, the Seventh Grand National Assembly passed the Protection of Competition Act.

More recently, in 2013, a new 5 euro note entered circulation, featuring the designation “euro” written in the Cyrillic alphabet. These markers—from early educational institutions to modern legislative acts and currency changes—illustrate the continuous evolution of Bulgarian society across various domains.
