The acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Georgi Kandev, stated on Friday that he had been subjected to pressure. In a video, Kandev reported receiving multiple calls on Thursday from undisclosed numbers. He claimed these calls warned him that an individual known as “Kartofa” and his associates were providing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO).
Kandev alleged that this operation was directed by a former official within the Ministry. In response to the situation, Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly backed Kandev, describing the alleged pressure as a “vendetta” occurring at the SCPO under prosecutor Emilia Rusinova. Gurov further suggested that the conspiracy was aimed at undermining the recent elections.
Interior Minister Emil Dechev also voiced support for the Secretary General, accusing “old cops” of employing deceptive tactics to destabilize the Ministry. Dechev asserted that the caretaker government was committed to minimizing electoral malpractice. Political opposition groups echoed concerns regarding the judicial process.
Assen Vassilev criticized the threats against Kandev as scandalous, advocating for systemic judicial reform. Meanwhile, the Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors of being utilized to target officials involved in institutional reform, referencing perceived patterns of state influence within the judiciary. The dispute centers on the integrity of the investigation and the alleged targeting of the acting Secretary General by elements connected to the Ministry.
