Dance Groups from Essen and Krefeld to Perform Jointly in Munich

The dance groups “Shevitsa” from Essen and “Mila Rodina” from Krefeld will collaborate for their first joint performance at the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival. The event is scheduled to take place at the BMW Park in Munich from May 15 to May 17. The collaboration, operating under the name “Shevitsi from Mila Rodina,” stems from a mutual commitment to preserving and promoting Bulgarian culture through dance abroad, according to their leader, Ivandzhelin Ivanova.

The combined ensemble will present the dance “Shopska Zakachka” (“Shopi tease”). This routine is choreographed by Iliya Petkov and draws inspiration from traditional dances originating in the Shopluk folklore region. The performance aims to recreate the lively spirit and playful interactions characteristic of village celebrations.

The group comprises 22 dancers, representing a range of ages from 14 to over 60. Several members were born or raised in Germany but maintain deep connections to their Bulgarian heritage. Preparation for this performance has involved rigorous, multi-weekly rehearsals, alongside the creation of specialized costumes and accessories.

This travelling festival gathers amateur Bulgarian folklore ensembles from various international locations. Since its inception in 2015, the event has been hosted in several European cities. The joint participation of the groups from Essen and Krefeld highlights a concerted effort to keep Bulgarian dance traditions vibrant on an international stage.
