Ministry’s Acting Secretary General Says He Has Been Pressured

In a video statement posted on Facebook, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, Georgi Kandev, addressed allegations of pressure he has faced. Kandev stated that he has encountered attempts to influence his position, noting that the tactics employed rely on fear and habit. He asserted that he will not yield to threats or informal negotiations, affirming his commitment to continuing his work as the department’s secretary general.

The Secretary General detailed receiving several calls on a Thursday, originating from hidden mobile numbers. During these communications, he was informed that an individual known as “Kartofa,” along with associates, were providing testimony that Kandev claims is false at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Kandev suggested that this coordinated effort was organized by a former official within the Interior Ministry, identified by the first name “Svetlyo.” He speculated that the objective of this activity may be to fabricate charges and compel him to resign.

In response to these developments, the Secretary General posed specific questions to the Sofia City Prosecution Service regarding the validity of the testimony provided by individuals who are allegedly “convicted and criminally charged.” He questioned both the nature of the testimony and the identities of those orchestrating the current situation. Kandev concluded his statement by rejecting the notion of silence, declaring that he will not compromise his position. The remarks indicate a continued commitment to his duties despite the external pressure.
