More Measles Cases Reported, Bringing Total to 165

Six additional measles cases have been reported in Bulgaria, elevating the total count to 165 as of April 23, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. The recent additions were distributed across several regions: two cases were identified in Vratsa, two in Lovech, and one each in Pleven and Sofia. In response to the outbreak, authorities initiated measures following the confirmation of the first eight measles cases on March 19, which were initially recorded in the Vratsa region.

Following this initial surge, the authorities mandated emergency measles immunization for all children who had not received the necessary vaccinations. Addressing the ongoing public health concern, Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate at the Ministry of Health, provided an update on preventative measures. Tasev stated that since early March, 20,000 children had received vaccinations protecting against measles, mumps, and rubella.

These figures highlight the current status of the measles situation within the national health framework. The Ministry continues to monitor the spread of cases and emphasizes vaccination as the primary strategy to control the outbreak. Public health officials urge continued adherence to immunization schedules to mitigate the risk associated with measles and safeguard community health.
